Employers, what we want from a job board?
We want to fill our job vacancies, quickly, and with the best candidates! It’s really that simple. Why then is it that we have such problems finding the right job sites to advertise on? Why even once we’ve made a decision do we still tend to feel; unsure of whether we’ll get any applications, unsure if we will attract relevant applications - OR unsure if we are actually getting value for money!
More and more I hear employers saying that they have invested in online recruitment advertising however they have not see the results they were expecting. How in that case can online recruitment advertising still not only be the No.1 candidate attraction tool, but still be the fastest growing?
Well let’s look at how the professionals do it.
It may pain us to say it, however recruitment agencies are THE specialists in attracting jobseekers. Personally I believe that the recruitment agency method of recruiting, although expensive, does produce some of the best candidates which in-turn, helps us hire the best people to develop our businesses. For that alone, quality recruitment agencies will always have a place in my heart.
So if they are the best at attracting jobseekers how do they do it? Obviously via networking and personal databases however the No.1 route of attraction is to post your jobs online and that’s what they do.. advertise their jobs online.
Let’s face it. It’s the recruitment agency’s job to have tried and tested every job board out there you can imagine. As a result you can bet your bottom dollar that as soon as a recruitment agency receives a new job vacancy, they will list it on their own website as well literally hundreds of other job boards within minutes.
That’s the trick to candidate attraction - it’s all about reach!
Recruitment agencies experience exactly the same problems as we do when posting a job adverts however, the reality is to minimise bad results, they spread as wide a net a possible.
Don’t believe me? Well why not the next time you speak to your recruitment agent ask them which job boards they advertise on? I bet they will not tell you, or possibly will tell you just one or two of the household names to keep you quiet. Well, would you tell them your best secrets? The reality is they have researched the market and are advertising every where possible!
It’s really that simple. Promote your jobs and brand as widely as possible and you will give yourself the best chance possible of attracting the best jobseekers. Even if a site it not 100% suited to you, promotion is promotion and in a candidate rich market like this, even if the job is not right for them, you can be pretty sure that it may be right for a friend or relative.
You will rarely, if ever, now find a recruitment agency promoting their job vacancies on just one job aboard. So why are we? And why do we expect so much from so few sites?
There are a number of ways you can increase your reach without it costing a thing. With a little research you can quickly find a range of sites that naturally benefit you as an employer and will promotion your jobs for free increasing your chances of finding the best jobseekers. One of the most relevant of these is the EmployersJobs.com website.
With over 3,500 employers now using EmployersJobs.com we have built a network of employers so relevant that you can guarantee your employer and job information is promoted in the most effective, to the most relevant jobseekers and ultimately maximise your reach.
For more advice or help on how you can maximise your reach don’t hesitate to drop me a line and I’ll happily give you some more pointers.

Excellent advise. Many employers we speak to are only advertising on one site and expect all their vacancies to be filled. HR Connexions advertise vacancies on 45-50 sites per vacancy and have contracts with over 800 boards. Another point worth mentioning is that as each vacancy is different and can be in different locations as online recruitment specialists, we pick out the most relevant job boards according to this criteria. Although your generic job boards will get you some great coverage, to ensure you get access to ALL the applicants in the market, a marketing role in Yorkshire will require some different sites to an engineering role in the south west.
I tend to disagree tho Lis - we at http://www.employersjobs.com feel we can provide a one stop shop to employers who do advertise on our job board.
No matter what the industry, or location, our HR-seo methodologies and home made software means your jobs get equal coverage on google, and other major search engines - meaning regardless of the details your job gets maximum exposure worldwide.
Don’t take my word for it tho - sign up an HR Connexions profile for free and test for yourself! I’m sure many of your clients could really benefit from having their vacancies advertised on our website.
I wanted to really know what was going on in the market so what I did was I started looking at the websites of employers. I could not believe it. This is where all the jobs were. There were 50+ jobs on many of these sites. There were so many employers out there, I could not keep track of them. For example, I am an attorney and there are over 2,000+ law firms in Los Angeles alone. Trying to track down all of these employer sites was exhausting.
The incredible thing is; however, is that if you take a sample of like 20 of these employers there are likely to be more jobs on the websites of these 20 employers than there are on Monster.com or another major website like this. It is really incredible when you see how many jobs there are out there on employer websites.
