Look the part and be the part

Samrt or casual?During the course of the week I read with amazement the story (and I’ve seen the pictures) of the Arsenal player Cesc Fabregas, who was accused of spitting at Hull City’s assistant manager after Arsenal had won the game.  If this is true he should be ashamed of himself and reprimanded as he is a role model for so many young people not only in the UK but throughout the world.

Even if not true the one thing that that stood out for me in this story was the picture.  Here we have a fully grown man playing professional football and being rewarded very well for it, but on this particular evening he’s dressed more like and inner city yob.  Jeans and a black hoddy.. is this the dress code for a top player and role model?  Dressed like that, even if not guilty of the offence, most would likely find him guilty just by what he’s wearing, even before he’s given his side to the story.

So what I am trying to get across here is the importance of looking professional in a professional environment.  Look professional and there a very good chance you will act professionally but at the very least you will give the right visual impression to those around you.

First impressions count and although just a tiny part in the process of securing your next job, it is very important that you get it right.  Before going for an interview make sure you ask the employer or the HR person that has organised your interview, what people wear.

Find out if it is formal, smart casual or casual and dress accordingly.  Best case scenario is to over dress then under-dress.  It’s much better to give the impression that you are taking thing seriously then under-dress and giving the impression you are not bothered.

So the moral of the story is that no matter if you are a professional football player looking to setting an example, or you are a first time job seekers look going to secure your first job.  Impression counts so dress smart, look the part and you’ll be the part.
