Tips for teenagers and graduates looking for work!

Teenagers in the job marketThe job market is an extremely daunting and competitive place for a young adult or even teenager. In an unstable economy teenagers are losing many of the positions generally reserved for them, to desperate adults trying to make a living.

However do not despair there are some pointers we can give graduates - and even teens - to help you find that part time job or position that will lead you onto your greater career path:

Network where you are known. Talk to as many people you are familiar with like your favourite book shop or restaurant. The fact that you have the customers perspective can work in your favour when convincing them you would be a valuable employee.

Do something you’re passionate about. Amusement parks, surf shops, general retail, malls, restaurants. If you love the movies try get yourself a cinema job etc. Even though we encourage you to pursue your interests - still apply at as many places as possible, you will need to cast a wide net to reap in a few offers.

A CV in its most basic form is a benefit to anyone of any age in the job market. When doing jobs allowed by law whilst under the age of 16, remember to collect references from each of your respective employers - babysitting, gardening and carwash etc. which will testify to your character and reliability.

Keep an eye on how friends are earning some cash. Often a friend can get you employed with the same employee by means of a referral, helping you to get accepted when you hand in your CV.

Very importantly use your resources. Especially the internet and media, you can search for entry level jobs using websites like www.employersjobs.com, apply to as many of these jobs as is possible.  Also don’t be discouraged as you’re at the most disadvantage because of your age and inexperience, so will be receiving some rejections. Remember to take interviews seriously for this reason. You need to stand out from the rest of the crowd, be on time, look neat and be confident!

Best of Luck!
