Football millionaires - what a game!
In these times of uncertainty, of worry and distress - what better antidote is there than to hear and read about the possibility that a footballer could be on the verge of moving from one football club to another and will be receiving a reported £500,000 per week. Yes per week. Please don’t allow jealousy to over take your emotions at this point. We have to think about the people involved with this possible transfer.
Firstly the man who has to pay around £90,000,000 to buy him, secondly the same man and the new club will have to buy insurance for the new player (which will be a small fortune as they don’t want him injured and never to be able to play again), and thirdly the player himself - what a weight on his shoulders.
The total cost including purchase price and the player’s first year’s salary will be in excess of £116, 000,000.
The average annual salary for the UK is about £24, 000. If you play around with these figures what you get is the £116, 000,000 could keep 4,832 people living for a year as if they earned £24,000 each. As Bill Shankly once said, ‘Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I’m very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.
Looks like he could have been right.
