Workplace disputes - keep a cool head and ask for help.
Work place disputes are a necessary burden most of us will encounter at least once on our career paths. Despite many perceptions that conflict in the workplace is always messy and toxic - it is possible to resolve such conflict in a positive and character building manner, for both employers and employees. In an economy where one can simply not afford to be unemployed being diplomatic and informed is key in any dispute situation - and soon help will be but a phone call away.
As of April 6 The new Acas code will take effect - replacing the 3 step grievance and disciplinary system; written statement, meeting and appeal. New provisions include an improved Acas helpline, an early conciliation service and a revised definition of what is fair and reasonable when tackling problems at work. The spirit being the encouragement of both employees and their employers, to keep a clear head and calm disposition throughout the dispute process. It’s important to remind yourself that mediation is a phonecall away in any situation that seems to be escalating beyond your control.
The code has a stringent ring of ‘fairness’ at its core and allows for employers to be supported in their cases from the onset - rather than an employer automatically losing a dispute case by mistepping in the protocol of a dispute procedure. This helps the employee in the sense that disputes are now discouraged - through active support - from quickly escalating into stressful and personal situations. We will publish any information about contact and helplines as they become available in April - so please check back here for more info!
